It draws the cell as a solid rather than a picture — every pixel is found by marching a ray through the volume until it hits something, thirty million steps a frame, each one measuring the distance to fourteen mitochondria, a lattice of endoplasmic reticulum and everything else in the cell. Phone GPUs can manage that, slowly, and will get very warm trying.
